About

mutegrey began as a personal exploration of form and material, inspired by brutalist architecture. The project traces its roots to travels through the Balkans and former Yugoslavian countries, exploring their monumental "spomeniks". These abstract concrete memorials left a lasting impression.

For those unfamiliar, brutalism is an architectural style that emerged in the mid-20th century. The term originates from the French béton brut, meaning "raw concrete". It celebrates unrefined textures, massive forms, and an honest expression of materials that are usually hidden away.

By day I work as a software developer. mutegrey started as a side project: a fascination with these structures that turned into a desire to bring the same raw aesthetic into everyday spaces. I began making my own sculptures and functional pieces, initially just for myself, experimenting with concrete and form. Over time, the practice grew into mutegrey, and I started sharing the pieces with others.

If you are curious about the monuments that inspired this project, the Spomenik Database is the best place to start. I also published the concrete mix ratios and process as an open-source tool: concrete-calculator on GitHub.
